The outer pleura (parietal pleura) is attached to the chest wall. The inner pleura (visceral pleura) covers the lungs and adjoining structures, viz. blood vessels, bronchi and nerves. The parietal pleura is highly sensitive to pain, while the visceral pleura is not, due to its lack of sensory innervation

The pleural membrane is a double-layered serous membrane found in the thoracic cavity. The outer layer is called the parietal pleura and lines the thoracic wall, and the inner layer is called the visceral pleura and covers the lungs. The produce lubricating serous fluid that causes them to adhere closely to one another. Holds the lungs to the thoracic wall allowing easier movement during breathing.
