As researchers have identified more links between mesothelioma and asbestos exposure, the material is less used. Before this discovery, however, millions of Americans have suffered a severe exposure to harmful substances.

Smoking is not only linked to mesothelioma, but smokers who are exposed to asbestos have a much greater chance of asbestos lung cancer (as much as 50 to 90 percent) and up to twice the risk of developing mesothelioma.
